UIS First Pitch Banquet
The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team will hold its sixth annual First Pitch Banquet on Jan. 26. The event will be headlined by San Diego Padres pitcher and Chatham, Ill. native Phil Maton.

"This event has become a fixture now for our program and the Springfield community that signifies baseball season and warm weather is right around the corner," said UIS baseball coach Chris Ramirez. "It is a great night to bring the local baseball fans and our UIS baseball families together and enjoy some time in support of the players in our program."

Maton has appeared in relief in 91 games over the last two seasons. He has a 4.28 ERA in the majors, and has struck out 101 batters in 90 1/3 innings. Maton was selected in the 2015 draft after a four-year career at Louisiana Tech. He started 50 games and appeared in 67 at Louisiana Tech. He won 21 games on the mound, had a 3.68 ERA, and recorded 324 strikeouts.

At Glenwood High School, Maton was an all-state performer and led the Titans to a state title. As a starter, he went 24-3 with a 1.24 ERA, and struck out 227 batters in 180 2/3 innings. He was a two-time all-conference selection, and as a senior was named the Conference Player of the Year.

"We are excited to have our first local guest speaker at our event this year in Glenwood High School standout and current Major Leaguer, Phil Maton," said Ramirez. "I'm sure it will be fun for the people in the community to reconnect with Phil, as he comes from a very strong baseball family that many people have watched him and his brothers grow up playing baseball here in town."

The banquet will start with a Meet and Greet from 5-6:45 p.m. The main event will start at 7 p.m., and will be emceed by former State Journal-Register sports editor Jim Rupert. The First Pitch Banquet will be at Boondocks Pub in Springfield, Ill., and the food will be sponsored by La Fiesta Grande.

The cost of the banquet is $60 per ticket, and $100 for the Meet and Greet. A table sponsorship is $600, which includes eight Meet and Greet passes. There will be a cash bar, and an online auction at www.uisprairiestars.com will conclude that evening.

Tickets are available at boondockspub.com. For more information, contact UIS baseball head coach Chris Ramirez at 217-303-3690 or chris.ramirez@uis.edu.
