The Spoonbenders
Defunct since 2000, The Spoonbenders of Springfield, Illinois exist only as a fond memory but leave behind a completed album that was never released.

In the early 1990s, long-suffering and widely reviled singer/songwriter Larry Stevens was noticed at an open mic by musicians Peter Romano and Dan Dietrich. A band soon was formed with Dan on bass guitar and backing vocals and Pete on the drums. The trio set about fleshing out Larry's small catalogue of pun-riddled novelty songs into something presentable for the local band scene and beyond. After making themselves a nuisance at the local bars, Pete and Dan's contacts with industry professionals and cool bands eventually were parlayed into decent opening slots for bands like The Elvis Brothers and Big Hello at better venues in Chicago and St. Louis. The band started booking recording sessions at Trax and other studios in Chicago as well as Champaign, Illinois, working on a demo in the days before 24-track analogue tape recording was eclipsed by the digital age. The band had nearly completed an album when they picked up a fourth member to round out the sound. Guitarist Mitch Marlow turned out to be the missing element and was added to every track on the album. His prowess as an engineer also added greatly in the production of the work tentatively titled "Happy Hollow," named for the midway at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The album was finally mastered at King Size Studio in Chicago. The finished product failed to find a home and the band decided not to release it without major label backing. Dan and Mitch moved to Chicago to pursue successful careers in the biz while Pete and Larry stayed in Springfield for steady jobs and family life. The band stopped playing out in 2000 and the album was shelved. A few lucky friends ever got copies of any of the tracks
